Breed Specific Grooming in Woodstock

We groom your dog to their breed standard - whether it's a show cut or just keeping them looking sharp.

Why Breed Cuts Matter

Every breed has a signature look. Poodles need their faces and feet clipped just right. Terriers get that hand-stripped coat texture. Schnauzers have their leg furnishings and beard shaped to standard. It's not just about looking good - these cuts were designed for the dog's original job, whether that was hunting, herding, or retrieving.

A proper breed cut keeps your dog comfortable and healthy. Cocker spaniels need their ear feathering thinned so air can circulate. Golden retrievers get their neck ruff trimmed to prevent matting. We've groomed hundreds of dogs in Woodstock and over in Ingersoll, and we know what each breed needs. You're not getting a generic clipper job here.

Breeds We Specialize In

We handle all the classics. Poodles and doodles get their signature clips - lamb, continental, or a modified pet trim that's easier to maintain. Terriers (westies, scotties, cairns, wire fox) get hand-stripped or clipped depending on what you want. Spaniels, setters, and retrievers get their feathering shaped and thinned. Schnauzers get that boxy look with clean lines.

We also do shih tzus, lhasa apsos, bichons, and maltese - all those breeds that need regular scissor work to keep their coats from dragging. If you've got a less common breed, just ask. We've worked with Portuguese water dogs, Bedlington terriers, even a few Kerry blues. After your first Dog Grooming visit, we'll know exactly what your dog needs every time.

Show Cuts vs. Pet Trims

Show cuts are the full deal. We follow AKC or CKC breed standards down to the millimeter. Every line is crisp, every angle is correct, and we use the techniques judges expect to see. If you're competing, you need this level of precision. We've prepped dogs for shows across Ontario, including clients from Tillsonburg who travel up for our expertise.

Pet trims are modified versions - still breed-appropriate, but easier to live with. Your poodle keeps the poodle look without needing a groom every three weeks. Your cocker gets a shorter body so they don't pick up every leaf in the yard. We'll talk through what makes sense for your lifestyle. Most of our clients want their dog to look like their breed without the high maintenance.

What Happens During Your Appointment

We start with a bath using the right products for your dog's coat type. Terrier coats need different shampoo than a golden's. Then we blow-dry and brush out completely - you can't cut a damp or matted coat and expect it to look right. For breeds that need it, we'll do a Deshedding Treatment first so the topcoat lays properly.

Then comes the actual cut. We use clippers, shears, thinning shears, and stripping knives depending on the breed. A schnauzer takes 90 minutes because we're hand-scissoring all those furnishings. A lab takes 45 because it's mostly thinning and tidying. We finish with ears cleaned, nails trimmed, and a final brush-through. You'll get a dog that looks like they stepped out of a breed book.

Keeping the Look Between Visits

Most breed cuts need maintenance every 6-8 weeks. Poodles and doodles grow fast, so you're looking at 4-6 weeks if you want them sharp. Terriers can go longer if they're clipped instead of stripped. We'll tell you exactly when to book next based on how your dog's coat grows.

Between grooms, brush at least twice a week. Use a slicker brush for long coats, a pin brush for silky coats, and a stripping knife (lightly) for wire coats. If you've got a Puppy Grooming client, start this routine early so they're used to it. And if you're also dealing with a cat, our Cat Grooming service keeps them looking good too - though cats obviously don't have breed standards to follow.

Frequently asked questions

How much does breed specific grooming cost?

It depends on the breed and coat condition. A standard poodle or doodle runs $90-$120. Terriers are $80-$110 depending on whether you want hand-stripping. Spaniels and setters are usually $85-$105. Show prep adds $30-$50 because of the extra time and precision. We'll give you an exact quote when you book - just tell us the breed and what kind of cut you're after.

Do you hand-strip terriers or just clip them?

We do both. Hand-stripping keeps the wiry texture and rich color that terrier coats are supposed to have, but it takes longer and costs more. Clipping is faster and cheaper, but the coat gets softer and lighter over time. Most pet owners clip. Show dogs and people who really care about that authentic terrier look go for stripping. We'll walk you through the difference at your first visit.

Can you do a breed cut if my dog is mixed?

Absolutely. If your dog is half poodle, we can do a poodle-style face and feet. If they're part schnauzer, we'll shape the beard and legs. We just work with whatever coat your dog actually has. Mixed breeds are honestly some of the most fun to groom because we get to customize the look. Bring in a photo if you've seen a style you like, and we'll make it happen.
